The second of Oregon's traditional trout openings Saturday will be a whopper for Portland-area anglers.
Not only are more trout going into Henry Hagg Lake near Forest Grove this week, but stocking finally has begun for the season in the popular Cascade lakes on the slopes of Mount Hood.
North Fork Reservoir, southeast of Estacada, will be ready for Saturday's opening day with plenty of holdover trout and an initial shot of 11,000 catchable trout this week.
Faraday Lake, a walk-in fishing hole between Estacada and North Fork Reservoir, also will be stocked, as well as Trillium, Clear and Timothy lakes on Mount Hood. All three are accessible after warm weather accelerated the snowmelt.
Olallie Lake, near the Cascades crest, isn't accessible and is not scheduled for stocking until next week at the earliest.
Trout seasons also are open in virtually all of Oregon's remaining streams and rivers where salmon and steelhead are found. None, however, are artificially stocked, and most have moderate to severe angling restrictions.
The May opening helps protect juvenile salmon and steelhead that head to sea in March and April and often are mistaken for trout.
Northeast Oregon streams and some lakes also open this weekend.
Wallowa Lake and Phillips Reservoir will be stocked with trout by the weekend.
Loopholes: Campers planning trips to fishing holes on the Century Drive Loop will find good access from Sunriver, including snow-free campgrounds from Crane Prairie Reservoir east, including North and South Twin Lakes and Wickiup Reservoir.
