G loomis Steelhead Fishing Rods

STR1084C     Length:  9'     Power:  4     Pieces:  2     Casting

As you travel north through steelhead country, rod lengths gradually increase (by the time you get to Canada, you're up to 12 feet or more), but when you look at the techniques involved it's easy to see why. Float fishing requires long rods to handle the floats and long leaders. Fishimg the Cowlitz River in west central Washington-just up the road from G.Loomis-you've hit 9-foot country, and that's where this rod shines. It handles the long leaders and light leads required for the low, clear water of summer, and the heavier gear needed to fish the high, green water of winter. The graphite is IMX, because sensitivity is paramount and overall weight is an important factor, especially in a longer rod.

STR1085S-SK     Length:  9'     Power:  5     Pieces:  2     Spinning

This steelhead and small salmon rod has the handle reversed from the traditional western style: Its foregrip is long and its rear grip is short, allowing the angler to put his hand ahead of the reel. This increases leverage and allows for a quick lift of the rod tip without moving the reel.

STR1086C     Length:  9'     Power:  6     Pieces:  2     Casting

While technically this is a big-water steelhead rod, its 9 feet of muscle give you plenty of flexibility for almost any sea-run species, including big Chinook salmon. If you fish Alaska or any of the big rivers of Washington and Oregon, it's a great drift rod that will handle big plugs pretty well, too. Forced to upsize your weights and line due to high water conditions? This is a great choice.

STR1141S     Length:  9'6"     Power:  1     Pieces:  2     Spinning

The ultimate light-line steelhead drift rod. The perfect action to handle 6-pound line and a subtle power, much like a fly rod, that tires fish quickly. We originally designed this rod for the western technique known as boondogging. The technique requires a more forgiving rod, because the fish will drop the bait the minute it feels any resistance. Consequently, this rod is soft enough to let you "see" the ^STRike before the fish has time to react. Agood bank rod, a great boat rod!

STR1143C     Length:  9'6"     Power:  4     Pieces:  2     Casting

A wonderful big-river rod, this is the rod of choice in northern Washington and southern British Columbia. The length allows you to fish a float or use traditional drift fishing methods with artificial eggs, bait and spinners. Boaters like this rod for boondogging the likes of the Skagit and the Cowlitz.

STR1173S-SK     Length:  9'9"     Power:  3     Pieces:  2     Spinning

Here's a Great Lakes steelhead rod, specially designed to fish the brush-lined ^STReams and rivers of the upper Midwest. It has a Skamania-Style handle, which is a fancy way of saying its foregrip is long and its rear grip short. Why? For added leverage and line control, especially with slip-bobber rigs and light splitshot dropper rigs. Because the center of balance is back behind the angler's hand, the reel acts like a counter balance when lifting the rod tip. The extra length also gives you better control, especially with longer leaders.

STR1201S-SK     Length:  10'     Power:  1     Pieces:  2     Spinning

A specialty steelhead rod designed to fish the smaller, ^STReams of the Great Lakes region, where you need a quick hook-set to keep the fish clear of brush and logs. The handle grips are reversed from the traditional western rod styles, with a long foregrip and short rear grip. This lets the angler put his hand ahead of the reel, increasing sensitivity and moving the center of balance back. That way he can lift the rod tip quickly without having to lift the reel. In fact, the reel acts as a counterweight, actually helping to lift the tip.

STR1263C     Length:  10'6"     Power:  3     Pieces:  2     Casting

The extra power of the 1263 will get you steelhead in larger rivers-especially drift fishermen who require long casts to reach those slots on the far bank. This rod is powerful enough for light-duty mooching for silvers, and it's especially good for float fishing.

STR1265C     Length:  10'6"     Power:  5     Pieces:  2     Casting

A powerful, extra-long drift rod designed specifically for the big rivers of British Columbia. While it's basically made for float fishing, it will work equally well using standard drift gear. Its medium-heavy power rating makes it ideal for silvers and chum salmon as well. Also makes a great downrigger/planer board rod for trolling in the Great Lakes.

STR1265S     Length:  10'6"     Power:  5     Pieces:  2     Spinning

Like the 1265C, this spinning rod was designed for smaller salmon in British Columbia. Works great with float fishing or standard drift gear. And it's a good alternative for downriggers and planer boards in the Great Lakes. Also a perfect rod for casting spoons and spinners from the shore at prime river mouths.
