Loomis Two Handed Rods

Developed centuries ago in Europe to catch Atlantic salmon, two-handed fly rods are seeing a huge resurgence due to the light weight and casting performance of new graphite materials. Their extended length provides amazing line mending control, and allows for unique casts that eliminate false casting. These rods are balanced to special two-handed fly lines, often called Spey lines, which are dual size rated (#8/9, #9/10, etc.). Heavier than standard weight-forward lines, Spey lines have very long-belly tapers to assist in Spey casting techniques (a method akin to roll casting). This helps compensate for the lack of a backcast, achieving plenty of distance despite the lower line speed. Because we design our rods with a faster "Scandanavian" taper, they Spey cast exceptionally well, yet can still be used with shooting heads to make both Spey and standard overhead casts. The majority of the models are available in GLX graphite, and we're proud to say that makes them the lightest, most responsive two-handers in the world—a big plus when you're maneuvering rods of this size. Steelhead anglers using floating lines will most likely prefer a #8/9 rod. For fishing sinking and floating lines, the added power of a #9/10 will make line pick-ups easier. For maximum distance, big flies and large fish, go with a #10/11 or #11/12.

FR1388/9-3    Length: 11'6"    Line: 8 or 9 standard WF line    Pieces: 3    Travel

This is chief rod designer Steve Rajeff's favorite steelhead rod. We categorize it as a two-hander, but it's really a very long one-handed rod with an extended fighting butt. The extra handle length allows you the option of fishing it in a conventional one-handed manner, or, when the situation dictates, with two hands. Because of this unique ability, it's designed to be fished with a standard 8 or 9-weight line (not a Spey line as with most of our two-handers). It's an outstanding light steelhead rod for open river fishing and it provides incredible line control and distance. GLX graphite makes it unbelievably light-about the weight of most 10' #8s—so it can be cast one-handed all day long with very little fatigue. Click for more  info   View/Buy

This ultra light-feeling 13' is the lightest two-handed fly rod made for an 8/9 line. A high performance rod that can Spey cast and overhand cast equally well, it makes entry into this big rod world as easy as possible thanks to its lightweight GLX design. It's suitable for summertime steelheading where floating lines are typical and also Atlantic salmon fishing where fish up to 20 pounds are anticipated.  Click for more  info   View/Buy

FR1688/9-3    Length: 14'    Line: 8/9 Spey line    Pieces: 3   Travel

A remarkable summer-run steelhead rod that's especially good on large western rivers where distance is an issue and backcasts are limited due to trees and brush. If you chase Atlantic salmon, this is a great spring rod for the likes of the infamous Miramachi. It gives you precise control on either Spey or overhand casts and it's capable of keeping a lot of line in the air, even with larger flies.  Click for more  info   View/Buy

FR1689/10-3   Length: 14'   Line: 9/10 Spey line   Pieces: 3  Travel
A very versatile all-purpose size, one step up from the 8/9. If you had to choose just one rod to cross over from summer to wintertime, this would be it. It's light enough to comfortably fish the summer runs, but has a little more power for the heavier sinking lines typically used through winter-run conditions. A good light-duty Atlantic salmon rod.  Click for more  info   View/Buy

FR18010/11-3    Length: 15'    Line: 10/11 Spey line   Pieces: 3
This is the most popular big rod for wintertime fishing or Atlantic salmon fishing in the 20 lb-plus range. It's an excellent choice for anglers looking to cast big flies a long way. Anglers looking for a king salmon rod will find it useful in places where backcast space is limited but you still want to belt it out there. The GLX model is the lightest two-handed rod of its size, making it extremely easy to cast. The GL3 is more affordable than most two-handed rods with this type of power and capability, making it a nice option for newcomers or anglers who don't fish as frequently.  Click for more  info   View/Buy

FR18611/12-3    Length: 15'6"    Line: 11/12 Spey line   Pieces: 3
This is a magnum two-hander, rated for 11 or 12-weight lines. Even though it's 15-1/2-feet long, it weighs less than 11 ounces. Unbelievable. It's a powerful big fish rod, designed for the wide, robust rivers of Norway, and everything about it is geared toward the maximum. Maximum casts beyond the normal range, maximum size flies, and maximum water flows. No room for a back cast? No problem. That's precisely what these rods are designed to do. And thanks to their GLX pedigree, they do it with unbelievable lightness. A salmon angler's dream rod.
